OUR CURRICULUM
EARLY YEARS AND PRIMARY
At AWS we are dedicated to creating a nurturing yet challenging environment for our Key Stage 1 students (aged between 5 and 7). We work hard to maintain a smooth shift from Early Years into the Primary section. Homeroom teachers follow the University of Cambridge Curriculum for literacy and numeracy. Science classes in AWS foster the spirit of scientific enquiry and are investigative in nature. We adapt the curriculum to the needs of students in Bahrain.
Our students also attend specialist classes for Music, Physical Education, Information Technology, Art and Design. Furthermore, we develop their ICT skills in well-maintained ICT labs. Students’ creativity and uniqueness are honed and developed in Art and Design.
We offer a number of extracurricular activities and field trips to inspire independence and confidence in young learners. Al Wisam School is committed to safeguarding cultural values while providing the best in Western education.
We are steadfast in our belief in polishing individual achievement and highly value the uniqueness of individuals. We offer one on one care to students and nurture their intellect and distinctiveness. Our teachers are internationally trained, exceptional and experienced educators. We also have teaching assistants in each class who provide a warm environment for young students.
PRIMARY SCHOOL is the term of four years of schooling between Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6, when the pupils are aged between 7 and 11 years.
At AWS, learners in primary school build on the skills, knowledge and understanding learnt during Key stage 1. Students develop language skills in an integrated programme of speaking, listening, reading and writing. The mathematics curriculum framework explores five content areas: number, geometry, measure, handling data and problem-solving. This curriculum focuses on principles, patterns, systems, functions and relationships so that learners can apply their mathematical knowledge and develop a holistic understanding of the subject. Young learners at AWS develop their scientific temperament. They are taught about the interdependence of organisms, sustainability of Earth and how things work. Learners are taught to relate their scientific skills, knowledge and understanding of applications of science in everyday life, including current issues.
Specialist department caters to developing music skills and precise. Children learn the intricacies of theatre in drama class. German skills are developed in the school with small nuggets of knowledge so learners are challenged and yet comfortable with the learning process.
We have an interactive, hands-on approach to learning. Learners are presented with experiences and opportunities to imbibe real-life scenarios for their education. They understand and express ideas and information confidently and creatively in more than one language and in a variety of modes of communication. They work effectively and willingly in collaboration with others. We instil in our student's strong moral values so they act with a robust sense of fairness, justice and respect for the dignity of the individual, groups and communities. They take responsibility for their own actions and the consequences that accompany them.
MIDDLE SCHOOL
MIDDLE SCHOOL is the term of four years of schooling between Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6, when the pupils are aged between 7 and 11 years.
The English department at AWS enables learners to communicate confidently and effectively and to develop the skills to respond to a range of information, media and texts with understanding and enjoyment. Learners who follow this framework will develop a first language competency in English based on a curriculum designed to be successful in any culture and to promote cross-cultural understanding.
In mathematics, the curriculum framework explores six content areas: number, algebra, geometry, measure, handling data and problem-solving. The first five content areas are all underpinned by problem-solving, which provides a structure for the application of mathematical skills. Mental strategies are also an important part of the number content. We believe that students must develop and learn the principles, patterns, systems, functions and relationships so that learners apply their mathematical knowledge and develop a holistic understanding of the subject
Science classes and Science curriculum focus on four content areas: scientific enquiry, biology, chemistry and physics. Scientific enquiry is about considering ideas, evaluating evidence, planning investigative work, and recording and analysing data. The scientific enquiry objectives underpin biology, chemistry and physics, which are focused on developing confidence and interest in scientific knowledge. Environmental awareness and some history of science are also part of the curriculum.
We seek to have learners that exercise initiative in applying thinking skills critically and creatively to recognize and approach complex problems and make reasoned ethical decisions. We offer a broad range of extracurricular activities, and these help our learners to explore concepts, ideas and issues that have local and global significance. In so doing, they acquire in-depth knowledge and develop understanding across a broad and balanced range of disciplines
HIGH SCHOOL
High School is divided into Upper Secondary(IGCSE) and Sixth form. Upper Secondary is the term for the two years of school education which incorporate IGCSEs, normally known as Year 10 and Year 11 when pupils are aged between 14 and 16.
An IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) is the international version of the Briish GCSE. The IGCSE is the world’s most commonly taken international examination.
We follow the Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE) syllabi in English, Arabic, ICT, Business Studies and all the Sciences. We offer Mathematics through the Edexcel curriculum.
Our students usually take between 5 to 7 subjects for IGCSE and have some choice over which subjects they study. We usually have an orientation meeting at the end of year 9 or beginning of year 10 to explain the IGCSE. The IGCSE is a two-year course taken during Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11), usually with the examination in June at the end of Year 11. Please note that once the choice is made, students will remain in that stream until the end of Year 11. At that point, students will sit for IGCSE external exams and can choose up to 7 subjects.
Examination results are announced by CAIE/Edexcel in mid-August before the start of the next academic year. Examinations are graded A* to G or from 9-1 depending on the subject. Students need to achieve at least 3 grades A* to C for entry to A Level courses. We usually expect students to achieve at least a grade C in those subjects they are hoping to study at A Level. Parents are free to come and discuss with school authority any questions they may have about the Year 10 options with prior appointment.
Students achieving 5A*s may receive up to 75 per cent scholarship from the school board (subject to board regulations)
