CURRICULUM OVERVIEW

Athena is a premiere school that provides full-time and resource educational services to students with special needs such as:

  • Learning Difficulties
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Communication Disorders
  • Physical Disabilities
  • Specific Learning Disability ( such us Dyslexia)
  • Down Syndrome (and other genetic or chromosomal disorders)
  • Other neuro developmental disorders such as ADHD, ODD, OCD, ADD

LEARNING PROGRAM

The Learning Programs of Athena are supported by:

  • Individual Education Plans
  • On site therapists (Speech Language Therapist, Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist, Behavior therapist)
  • The Athena Curriculum puts emphasis on learning key competencies in English, Math and the Arabic language & culture
  • Dynamic linkages with families and communities through direct contacts and consultations and school-wide events
  • Life Skills training incorporated in the classes and individualized programs
  • Mainstream integration opportunities
  • Mentorship on varied areas of expertise in order to hone the gifts/intelligences of the students
  • Transition support in traversing the academic path and post school options

Athena programs highlight among others, an acceptable teacher-student ratio, well-qualified teaching staff, and various support services that foster each student’s well-being and advocates reaching one’s highest potential.

Athena acknowledges the value of the team approach. The school advocates continuous open communication with all stakeholders – parents, students, teachers/interventionists and administration.

STUDENT PLACEMENT

Placement in classes at Athena is based on four criteria: age, level of language , cognitive/performance and behaviour.

Initial placement is determined based on psychological/medical evaluation of the child’s attending physician and observations and information from parents gathered via interview conducted by the admissions officer.

Further assessments will be done by the school interventionists in order to determine which placement will best address the unique needs of the child.

TRANSITION PROGRAM

Transition Program and Vocational Training (post 16 to adults)

The goal of the transition program is to develop life skills that will help our students as they strive towards adult life. The life coach and vocational team focus on the students’ functional academic skills such as counting, following procedures, planning.

These skills are then applied by working in the areas of the school such as the Thrift Shop, library and canteen which are then integrated to the students’ daily tasks such as grocery shopping and making schedules and appointments with the end goal of acquiring independence and maturity whether at home or living alone.

SCHEDULE

The school is open on working days, Sundays to Thursdays from 7am to 2:00pm.

The day starts at the ringing of the school bell at 7am.

REFERENCE:

  • A NON-REFUNDABLE payment of 200BD must be paid upon enrollment.
  • Basic Tuition Fee includes participation in group classes as assigned during assessment, therapy fee for two (2) sessions per week. Basic tuition fee is paid monthly divided in ten (10) monthly installments. Payment due date is on or before the 16th of every month, beginning September to June.
  • **Therapy Fee in this table is fixed at two (2) sessions per week, at 30 minutes per session. Increase in frequency of therapy can be requested. Additional fee applies.
